Point One
Almost every conversation about religion begins in the wrong place — with what you feel, what you want, what you think you deserve — it begins with you. Christianity does not begin there. It begins with the claim that before there was anything, God already was.
“In the beginning, God....”
Genesis 1:1
He is not a force, a feeling, or the universe wearing a face. He is not a whisper or a wind blow. He is God. A triune being with three separate persons in one being. You did not build yourself, and you do not own yourself. He created you, perfectly and purposefully.
“Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”
Revelation 4:11
He is holy. We have softened that word until it means something like well-behaved, but it means closer to blinding. Pure. Entirely without corruption, and therefore entirely set against it. God is not one more opinion about what is good. He is the standard that gives the word good its meaning.
“This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”
1 John 1:5
If that is true, then the central question of your life is not how to be happy. It is how do I align my life with God's will so that I can be happy.
Point Two
This is the part nobody likes.
You are not an accident and you are not nothing. Out of everything God made, he made exactly one creature in his own likeness.
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”
Genesis 1:27
That is why human life is so valuable, that there is objective wrong, that justice and beauty and love are real rather than useful chemistry. You are carrying the image of God. It is the best thing about you.
And yet, when you spend life on you, you cannot satisfy your desires. Life is frustrating and hard. We chase our desires and our desires leave us empty, even the very wealthy and successful find success and wealth empty and unsatisfying.
“So I began to despair about all the fruit of my labor for which I worked so hard on earth...What does a man acquire from all his labor and from the anxiety that accompanies his toil on earth? For all day long his work produces pain and frustration, and even at night his mind cannot relax. This also is futile!”
Ecclesiastes 2:20-23 (NET)
That's one of the ways we sin against God. We seek our own desires and ignore His.
“Having heard everything, I have reached this conclusion: Fear God and keep his commandments, because this is the whole duty of man. For God will evaluate every deed, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.”
Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 (NET)
But we don't stop there do we. We lie and cheat and steal. We covet and gossip and harbor resentment. We justify our actions by minimizing and comparing. "I'm not as bad as that guy!" "Hey I only stole because I was hungry!"
“For the one who obeys the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a violator of the law.”
James 2:10-11 (NET)
Problem is, that's sin. And sin has a penalty. You see, in the beginning, God created a perfect place without sin and put two perfect humans there and gave them everything to succeed. But they disobeyed, they had one rule and they broke it. We might think we would do better, but that's the point. In Adam, all men sinned. Not because we were there, but because we would have done it too.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 6:23
And the penalty for sin does not stay quiet forever. You are going to die, and afterward you will be dealt with honestly by the God who made you. Not according to your intentions. According to the truth.
“And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment”
Hebrews 9:27
That should land heavily, because it is heavy. No one can offer you a cure while refusing to name the disease. But watch what happens in the middle of the very sentence that condemns us.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 6:23
Wages are what you have earned. A gift is something else entirely.
Point Three
God did not leave it there.
He could have. He had every right to. Instead God did the strangest and most expensive thing in all of history: he came here himself.
Stop! That's why this is not religion. It's not about what I bring to the table or what I'm willing to pay or what I can work my way toward.
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14
Jesus of Nazareth was not just a wise teacher who later got promoted, and not a legend that swelled in the retelling. He was God in a human body — born to a woman, hungry, exhausted, hated, executed under a Roman governor whose name is still on record. And he lived the life of perfect obedience to God that you and I have not managed for a single day.
Then he went to a cross and died the death our sin had earned. That exchange is the center of everything, and it is worth reading twice.
“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
2 Corinthians 5:21
Your record went to him. His record is held out to you. The judgment you had coming landed on Him instead — and it landed there not because God was talked into it, but because He wanted you back.
What an unbelievable exchange. My sin for His righteousness.
“but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8
And then the claim on which the whole thing stands or falls. Three days later he walked out of the grave — bodily, publicly, in front of witnesses who afterward went to their own deaths refusing to take it back.
“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures”
1 Corinthians 15:3–4
Paul wrote that down within a few decades of the event, to readers who could still go and question the witnesses themselves. And there were thousands of them for weeks seeing Him walk among us. It is not offered as a private feeling or a beautiful metaphor. It is a public claim about something that either happened in ordinary history or did not.
“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
Acts 4:12
Point Four
Knowing this and doing nothing is still a decision.
The first thing Jesus ever preached was not complicated, and it was not a suggestion.
“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
Mark 1:15
Repent means turn. It does not mean clean yourself up first — you cannot, and he is not asking you to. It means you stop defending yourself, agree with God about what you are, and turn away from the life you have been protecting.
Believe means trust him. Christ himself — not your sincerity, not your attendance, not your good intentions, not a prayer you repeated once as a child. Trust that his death paid for you and his resurrection proves it.
“because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Romans 10:9
You cannot earn this, and you are not being asked to. It is a gift, and a gift is received with empty hands.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
Ephesians 2:8–9
And what you receive is not a better philosophy of life. You receive a new identity, with a new purpose. You receive God himself — forgiven, adopted, permanently.
“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God”
John 1:12
You may not feel any different, and feelings are poor evidence in either direction. What has changed is not your mood but your standing: you are no longer facing God as a defendant. Christians still fight sin, still doubt, still fail badly — but they do it as sons and daughters rather than as convicts rebelling, and they never again have to earn what has already been accredited to them.
If you want words
God, you made me, and I have lived for myself instead of for you. I have sinned against you, and I deserve your judgment. I believe Jesus Christ died in my place and rose from the dead. I turn from my sin, and I trust him alone to save me. Thank you. I am yours.
There is nothing magic in that wording. God is not listening for the right phrasing — He is waiting for you to talk to Him.
If you meant it — what now
If you need a place to start, start with the Gospel of John.
Start there, not at the front of the Bible. It was written for exactly this purpose, and you can read the whole thing in an evening.
“but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
John 20:31
Out loud, plainly, in your own words — thanking him, confessing to him, asking him for help. He is not a technique to master. He is your Father now.
This is not extra credit, and it is not optional. Christianity was never designed to be done alone. Look for a church that opens the Bible and explains it, takes sin and grace seriously, and knows its members by name. Then walk in this Sunday.
Tell someone what has happened to you. Then be baptized and commit yourself to that church as a member — not as a formality, but because from here you are meant to belong to people who will help you follow Christ for the rest of your life.
